Enjoyment of reading, diversity of reading and metacognitive awareness of reading strategies are cognitive and affective variables pertaining to three facets of reading engagement for students to read happily, widely and skilfully. These have been found to be related to effectiveness in reading instruction. They together form a focus for this study to examine the underlying student- and across-level mechanisms to explain gender differences in reading performance of Macao students. Drawing data from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2009 Study, the mediation effects of gender and the school’s gender composition on reading performance are analysed. Two findings are of both theoretical and pedagogical interests. Firstly, the three facets of reading engagement from the nurture perspective explain substantially the within-school gender gap. Secondly, in coeducation context where students read happily and skilfully, there are gender-specific peer influences across-level onto student reading performance. Implications for gender-inclusive reading instruction programmes are discussed. 相似文献

We tested the effects of morphological and orthographic differences between English, Hebrew, and Arabic on the functioning of the two cerebral hemispheres. University students who were native speakers of each of the three languages performed a lateralized consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) identification task. The stimuli were presented vertically in three conditions: left visual field (LVF), right visual field (RVF), and bilaterally (BVF). Three dependent measures were used: (1) exposure duration of the stimuli in order to achieve a 50% error rate, (2) total number of errors in each presentation condition and (3) the difference between errors on the first letter and errors on the last letter, a qualitative measure of sequential processing. Arabic readers required longer exposure durations of the syllables in order to achieve a 50% error rate than Hebrew readers, who in turn, required longer exposure durations than native English readers. Readers of all three languages evinced left hemisphere specialization for this linguistic task and a bilateral advantage. The qualitative patterns revealed that the Arabic and Hebrew speakers showed the same hemispheric difference pattern, that was different from the one shown by English readers, and that Arabic readers showed a qualitative pattern suggesting higher levels of sequential processes in both hemisphere than readers of Hebrew and English. This paper reports the findings of an investigation aimed at gaining a clearer understanding of the nature of vocabulary difficulties
associated with dyslexia and associated risk status. Three studies were conducted to examine preschoolers’ access and mastery
of syntactic- and phonological-based processes believed to support word learning. Results are reported for 82 participants
whose (reading) risk status was assessed from a composite of measures known to be related to reading development. As expected,
risk status correlated positively with participants’ ability to recall the phonological form of novel nouns. No relationship
was found between risk status and participants’ use of syntactic form-class cues in interpreting the noun class of novel names
in isolation. However, the ability to use form-class cues was impaired for at-risk participants on a task that required them
to learn both the phonological form and noun class. Findings are discussed in relation to the suggestion that limitations
in processing resources such as working memory rather than in the availability of language structures may be at the root of
the reported poor performance by at-risk children on vocabulary and other linguistic measures.
